Saudi-Moroccan Relations: Historical Ties and Strong Cooperation

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Kingdom of Morocco share strong historical relations, rooted in bonds of brotherhood and mutual cooperation. These close ties are exemplified by the deep connections between the leaders of both nations and the enduring relationships between their peoples. Over the years, these relations have consistently developed across various domains, establishing a successful model of Arab cooperation.
Relations between Saudi Arabia and Morocco are distinguished by close political and security coordination, as both nations share a common vision on many regional and international issues. Both sides are committed to strengthening strategic agreements in the interest of their mutual goals. The cooperation extends to military and security realms, particularly in combating terrorism and organized crime, illustrating the depth of their strategic partnership.
The economic cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Morocco is one of the fundamental pillars of their bilateral relations. Saudi Arabia finances several development projects in Morocco and holds significant investments there. Approximately 250 Saudi companies operate in Morocco, while around twenty Moroccan companies are present in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, about 22,000 Moroccans are employed in Saudi Arabia, further underlining the strong economic ties between the two nations.
Saudi Arabia is Morocco’s largest trade partner within the Arab world. In 2023, trade between the two countries reached approximately 6.032 billion Saudi riyals, which includes Moroccan imports from Saudi Arabia valued at 592 million riyals and Moroccan exports to Saudi Arabia amounting to 5.44 billion riyals. Moroccan exports to Saudi Arabia consist of inorganic chemicals, cars and spare parts, fruits, and clothing. Conversely, Morocco imports mineral products, salt, cement, paper, as well as tanning and coloring products from Saudi Arabia.
The signed agreements between the two countries reflect the depth of their cooperation across various sectors. No fewer than 68 agreements and memorandums of understanding cover areas such as economy, trade, finance, investment protection, justice, security, counter-terrorism, renewable energies, education, health, tourism, transportation, environment, media, and craftsmanship. These agreements have contributed to strengthening bilateral cooperation and achieving sustainable development beneficial to both countries.
With the continual strengthening of Saudi-Moroccan relations, the prospects for cooperation between the two countries look promising, particularly in the fields of technology and renewable energies. The joint political and security coordination also opens wider opportunities to enhance regional stability and cooperation on matters of mutual interest. With the solid foundations on which these relations rest, the future appears rich with fruitful partnerships between the two nations, translating their shared ambitions for development and stability.
