Morocco Advocates for a Peaceful Solution in the DRC at the AU Peace and Security Council

Morocco Reaffirms Commitment to Dialogue for Stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Morocco reiterated its commitment to a dialogue-based solution to ensure the territorial integrity and stability of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) during the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) meeting held on Friday evening at the level of heads of state and government.
Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Living Abroad, represented Morocco as a member of the AU’s PSC. He emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the DRC as well as all sovereign nations.
During this meeting, Bourita stressed the necessity of a sustainable resolution to the crisis in Eastern DRC, highlighting that the ongoing instability jeopardizes continental peace and security and endangers regional development and cooperation efforts. He called for decisive and responsible actions to initiate a peaceful and enduring settlement of the conflict.
The Minister also reaffirmed that Morocco, faithful to its position, supports the principles of coexistence, good neighborliness, and the peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue. The Kingdom expressed its opposition to any form of separatism and firmly condemned the destabilizing actions of armed groups that threaten the national unity of states.
In this context, the Moroccan delegation insisted on the need for constructive and sincere dialogue, the only viable path to avoid escalation and promote peace and stability in the region. Morocco also emphasized the urgency of an immediate ceasefire, adherence to peace agreements, and the resumption of negotiations.
Bourita reminded attendees that only a consensual political solution could end the crisis and stressed that any security or military approach would only worsen the situation. He also underscored the necessity for unimpeded humanitarian access to alleviate the suffering of civilian populations and meet their most urgent needs.
The Minister praised the efforts of Angolan President João Lourenço, the current Chairperson of the African Union and a champion of peace and reconciliation in Africa, for engaging the concerned parties in negotiations to prevent any escalation of the conflict.
This meeting took place alongside the AU summit for heads of state and government, scheduled for February 15 and 16.
