The Villa des Arts in Casablanca to Showcase Exhibition on Pioneering Moroccan Female Artist Fatna Gbouri
From January 21 to March 31, the Villa des Arts in Casablanca will host an exhibition dedicated to Fatna Gbouri, a pioneering figure in Moroccan female painting. Under the theme “The Universe of Fatna Gbouri – Major Works 1982-1990,” the exhibition will highlight the artist’s most emblematic creations, particularly focusing on the pivotal period from 1982 to 1990.
During this decade, Fatna Gbouri fully embraced her talent, becoming part of the singular art movement, also known as “Post-Brut Art.” According to the organizers’ statement, this art form is characterized by its instinctive and spontaneous approach, moving away from traditional academic methods in favor of pure expression shaped by intuition.
Over her 30-year career, Fatna Gbouri has created a vibrant and unique collection where she translates her vision of Morocco and traditional popular culture through bold works. Her paintings, deliberately distant from classical conventions, are striking in their freedom and authenticity. By playing with bright and eclectic colors, the artist manages to immortalize emotionally charged moments while preserving the essence of the beauty that emanates from these popular scenes.
Much like Chaïbia Talal, Fatna Gbouri left a mark on her time by infusing her works with a timeless quality, reaffirming the richness of Moroccan culture in the face of globalization’s omnipresence.
Born in 1924 in Tnine Gharbia, in the province of Safi, Fatna Gbouri began painting at the age of 58 in 1982 and has since left an indelible mark on the Moroccan artistic scene.
