Ensuring a Sufficient Supply for a Controlled Ramadan

As the sacred month of Ramadan approaches, Moroccan authorities are intensifying their efforts to ensure optimal market supply—an essential challenge given the high demand during this period of increased consumption. Stalls in souks, markets, and supermarkets are often inundated, particularly for essential products.

Consumption during Ramadan reaches unprecedented levels compared to other months of the year, necessitating increased vigilance from authorities to ensure the availability of essential goods, monitor their quality, and track price fluctuations. In response, the government has mobilized all relevant stakeholders to conduct rigorous monitoring of stocks and domestic production while strengthening control mechanisms.

An Abundant Supply and Effective Management

Recent data indicates that the most consumed food products during Ramadan, such as cereals, vegetables, oils, and dairy products, will be available in sufficient quantities at reasonable prices. According to the relevant ministries, market supplies are stable, with stocks appropriately adjusted to meet demand during the holy month and beyond. Production forecasts suggest a streamlined supply without major disruptions.

Ryad Mezzour, the Minister of Industry and Trade, confirmed that the government is fully committed to ensuring the availability of basic products at affordable prices throughout the Kingdom. Enhanced inspections will be conducted in markets to combat any form of speculation or illicit practices that could skew prices.

Enhanced Monitoring of Food Production

Agriculture Minister Ahmed El Bouari assured that his department is closely monitoring the production of the most consumed goods to guarantee their availability in adequate quantities at reasonable prices. Additionally, Zakia Driouich, Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries, clarified that efforts are underway to ensure a supply of frozen fish at prices ranging from 17 to 100 dirhams during Ramadan.

Controls to Protect Consumers

Government measures extend beyond supply management and include strict oversight of compliance with regulations. The inter-ministerial commission underscored the need to amplify interventions by control services to ensure price transparency, combat speculation, monopolies, illegal storage, fraud, and counter any practices detrimental to the proper functioning of markets.

Communication mechanisms have also been established to allow citizens to report any irregularities through dedicated support cells, facilitating real-time monitoring.

Effective Coordination for a Managed Ramadan

As Ramadan approaches, emphasis is placed on coordination among various stakeholders to ensure a smooth supply chain and manage price fluctuations. Authorities will continue to closely monitor markets, adjusting regulatory mechanisms as needed. Thanks to the mobilization of both public and private sectors, consumer needs should be met throughout the month.

The inter-ministerial commission, chaired by the Minister of Economy and Finance, will hold weekly meetings to track market developments and coordinate interventions from mixed commissions deployed across regions, prefectures, and provinces, thereby ensuring a well-managed Ramadan.
