Morocco Launches University Degree in Medicine for Inmates: A Pioneering Initiative in Africa and the Arab World

Title: University Diploma in Prison Medicine Launched in Morocco
The General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) has announced the establishment of a university diploma in prison medicine aimed at enhancing the skills of physicians to address the specific health-related challenges within correctional facilities.
This initiative was developed in partnership with Hassan II University and the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Casablanca, with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). According to the DGAPR, this program marks a significant first in Africa and the Arab world, highlighting the importance of this medical specialty.
The curriculum of the diploma is designed to be comprehensive and multidisciplinary, allowing healthcare professionals working in prisons to acquire the necessary skills to meet the demands of their work environment. It also considers the ethical, regulatory, and medical dimensions pertinent to this specific field.
The inaugural training unit of this diploma will take place on February 21 and 22 at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Casablanca, benefiting 20 physicians from the DGAPR, who will form the program’s first cohort.
This university diploma represents a significant advancement in the training of medical personnel working within Moroccan prisons and opens new avenues for cooperation, particularly under the framework of South-South collaboration, concludes the DGAPR’s statement.
