Launch of “Shabab Labs”: An Innovative Initiative for Youth in Morocco

The Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, in collaboration with UNESCO, has launched “Shabab Labs,” an innovative action-research program aimed at enhancing youth engagement in Morocco. Designed by and for young people, this program seeks to establish innovation labs in Youth Houses throughout the Kingdom, fostering participatory research and citizen involvement.

Morocco thus becomes the first country to implement this initiative stemming from UNESCO’s international “Youth as Researchers” program, marking a global first where a national institution leads this initiative, highlighting the Kingdom’s commitment to its youth and their future.

A Pioneering Program for Youth Engagement

In the initial phase of the program, 20 doctoral researchers will be selected and trained to guide young people in Youth Houses situated across the country. These spaces will provide youth with the opportunity to collaborate, experiment, and propose innovative solutions to local challenges. Through this approach, the “Shabab Labs” aim to foster active civic engagement and encourage young people to become agents of change in their communities.

A Space for Experimentation and Collaboration

Shabab Labs will serve as experimental hubs where young individuals can apply participatory research methods while tackling local societal issues. In collaboration with local stakeholders, participants will have the chance to propose concrete solutions to the challenges faced in their communities, all while strengthening their civic commitment.

The doctoral researchers overseeing these projects will receive comprehensive training provided by UNESCO. Their mission will involve supporting young participants in acquiring research skills, supervising the implementation and publication of their work, and raising awareness about local issues.

A Unique Opportunity for Researchers

This program also represents a valuable opportunity for doctoral researchers, allowing them to develop practical experience and refine their academic and pedagogical skills. In addition to receiving an official certificate from UNESCO and the ministry, their research findings will be published as part of the initiative, thus providing significant recognition in the fields of social and participatory research.

The “Shabab Labs” thus mark an important turning point in youth and social innovation policies in Morocco, providing young people with a framework to realize their ideas and actively participate in the development of their communities.
