Consumer Price Index in Tangier: February 2025 Update
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for households in the city of Tangier recorded an increase of 0.4% in February 2025 compared to the previous month, with an annual rise of 2.4%.
In terms of food products, the index saw a 0.8% increase in February, primarily due to rising prices in categories such as "fruits" (5.4%), "vegetables" (3.7%), "fish and seafood" (3.2%), "milk, cheese, and eggs" (1.1%), "other food products not classified elsewhere" (0.6%), as well as "bread and cereals" and "sugar, jam, honey, chocolate, and confectionery" (0.1%).
The index for non-food products also experienced a slight rise of 0.2%, driven by increases in prices in the "transport" category (0.7%), "clothing and footwear" (0.3%), and "various goods and services" (0.1%).
Certain categories showed stable developments, including "housing, water, electricity, and other fuels," "furniture, household items, and routine household maintenance," "health," "communication," "education," and "restaurants and hotels." However, the index for the "leisure and culture" category fell by 0.2%, which did not significantly impact the overall trends.
On an annual basis, food prices rose by 3.9%, largely due to sharp increases in the prices of "meats" (12.7%), "fish and seafood" (12%), "vegetables" (9.5%), and "other food products not classified elsewhere" (5.7%). The prices of "coffee, tea, and cocoa" and "tobacco" increased by 2.9%, while "fruits" rose by 1.2% and "bread and cereals" by 0.4%.
Despite a drop in the prices of "oils and fats" (5.2%) and "mineral waters, soft drinks, and fruit and vegetable juices" (2.6%), these fluctuations did not affect the overall trend.
Finally, the index for non-food products also reported an annual increase of 1.4%, with price variations ranging from a decrease of 1.3% in "transport" to an increase of 6.5% in "restaurants and hotels."
The CPI remains a crucial tool in measuring inflation and contributes to the analysis of the economic situation, serving as a reference for financial policies and the indexing of socio-economic contracts.
