A Severe Storm Disrupts Transport and Leaves Thousands of New Zealanders Without Electricity

Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds struck several regions of New Zealand on Monday, causing significant disruptions in transportation and widespread power outages, particularly on the North Island.
Transport Disrupted on the North Island
The severe weather led to the suspension of numerous transport services, including flight, train, and ferry cancellations, as well as the closure of several roads across different areas of the North Island. In Wellington, the capital city, the majority of flights arriving and departing were either canceled or delayed on Monday morning.
According to local media, Air New Zealand has suspended its operations at Wellington, Napier, and Palmerston North airports.
Tens of Thousands Left Without Power
Authorities reported that over 30,000 homes were left without electricity, including about 10,000 customers in the Wellington region, due to damage caused to infrastructure by the winds and flooding.
Caution Urged and School Closures
Drivers have been urged to avoid traveling throughout the Wellington region, while several schools have closed their doors. Emergency services remain mobilized to address the significant damage recorded in various areas.
Images of Flooded Neighborhoods
Images shared on social media show semi-rural neighborhoods submerged, homes flooded, and sections of roads damaged or collapsed after the waters receded.
Storm Expected to Hit the South Island
Authorities have warned that the storm is expected to move towards the South Island on Tuesday, cautioning of further disruptions and urging the public to remain vigilant.
