Benaïtia Steps Down as Sporting Director of OM

Former Moroccan International Mehdi Benatia Resigns as Sporting Director of Olympique de Marseille

Retired Moroccan international Mehdi Benatia announced his departure from the role of sporting director at Olympique de Marseille on Sunday, just days after parting ways with Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi.

In a message shared on social media, Benatia stated, “I leave with the feeling that I have given my all professionally, but with immense regret for not being able to alleviate the atmosphere surrounding the team.”

He continued, “Despite recent setbacks and some challenging sporting scenarios, the project is moving forward. However, I cannot ignore the current climate. I feel a growing discomfort, a fracture that deeply pains me. In Marseille, only results matter.”

The former defender of Juventus and Bayern Munich joined OM in November 2023 as a sporting advisor to the club’s Spanish president, Pablo Longoria, before being appointed as sporting director in January 2025.
