CM6RI-SMGM Partnership to Strengthen Medical Genetics in Morocco
CM6RI–SMGM Partnership: Advancing Medical Genetics in Morocco
The Mohammed VI Center for Research and Innovation (CM6RI) and the Moroccan Society of Medical Genetics (SMGM) signed a partnership agreement on Thursday in Rabat, aimed at enhancing collaboration in the fields of medical genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics.
The agreement, which was endorsed by CM6RI Director Saber Boutayeb and SMGM President Karim Ouldim, is designed to provide geneticists across the country direct access to the Center’s advanced diagnostic platforms. It also plans to involve the SMGM in the "Rare Diseases" initiative spearheaded by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health (FM6SS).
This partnership aligns with a national movement to promote scientific research in service of public health and seeks to foster the exchange of expertise, encourage lifelong education, and develop collaborative projects that further the advancement of genetic sciences in Morocco.
Through this agreement, both CM6RI and SMGM reaffirm their mutual commitment to promoting medical innovation in a strategically vital area for the future of medicine in Morocco. The partnership will also broaden cooperation in scientific research, training, and various advanced specialties within medical genetics.
In a statement to the MAP, CM6RI Director Saber Boutayeb emphasized the critical importance of medical genetics, which is linked to numerous genetic disorders, asserting that this collaboration will enhance applied research and clinical practices in genetic medicine.
For his part, SMGM President Karim Ouldim noted that this agreement will help structure cooperation between national institutions and medical geneticists, particularly through the development of a dedicated roadmap for scientific research and early diagnosis of rare and genetic diseases. The goal is to improve patient care through more precise and advanced medicine.
The partnership also includes plans to establish a national registry for rare diseases, aimed at mapping their regional prevalence, enhancing diagnosis, providing tailored genetic counseling, and supporting affected families.
The Mohammed VI Center for Research and Innovation, part of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health, is dedicated to the advancement of applied medical research and the valorization of scientific discoveries. It works to bridge the gap between fundamental research and clinical applications, contributing to the emergence of a national innovation ecosystem.
Meanwhile, the Moroccan Society of Medical Genetics is a non-profit scientific association that brings together the country’s medical geneticists. Its mission includes continuous education, the encouragement of research, and the sharing of best practices in the field of medical genetics.
