CM6RI–SMGM Partnership to Strengthen Medical Genetics in Morocco

CM6RI–SMGM: Establishing a New Partnership for Medical Genetics in Morocco

On Thursday, the Mohammed VI Center for Research and Innovation (CM6RI) and the Moroccan Society of Medical Genetics (SMGM) signed a partnership agreement in Rabat aimed at enhancing collaboration in the fields of medical genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics.

The agreement, signed by CM6RI Director Saber Boutayeb and SMGM President Karim Ouldim, specifically intends to provide all geneticists in the Kingdom with direct access to the Center’s advanced diagnostic platforms. The SMGM will also be involved in the "Rare Diseases" initiative, supported by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health (FM6SS).

As part of a national momentum to elevate scientific research in the service of public health, this partnership aims to promote skill exchange, encourage continuous training, and develop collaborative projects that advance genetic sciences in Morocco.

Through this agreement, CM6RI and SMGM reaffirm their shared commitment to fostering medical innovation in this strategically important field for the future of medicine in Morocco. The partnership will also broaden the scope of collaboration to include scientific research, training, and various advanced specialties in medical genetics.

In a statement to the MAP, CM6RI Director highlighted the significant role of medical genetics, which is linked to a considerable number of genetic diseases, asserting that this collaboration will help bolster applied research and clinical practices in genetic medicine.

For his part, the SMGM President noted that this agreement will further structure cooperation between national institutions and geneticists, particularly through the development of a roadmap dedicated to scientific research and the early diagnosis of rare and genetic diseases. The goal is to enhance patient care with more precise and advanced medical solutions.

The partnership also includes plans for the establishment of a national registry for rare diseases, aimed at mapping their regional prevalence, improving diagnosis, providing tailored genetic support, and assisting affected families.

The Mohammed VI Center for Research and Innovation, an entity of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health, is dedicated to advancing applied medical research and promoting scientific discoveries. It works to establish a bridge between fundamental research and clinical applications, thus contributing to the emergence of a national innovation ecosystem.

On the other hand, the Moroccan Society of Medical Genetics is a non-profit scientific association bringing together the country’s geneticists. Its mission includes continuous training, promoting research, and sharing best practices in the field of medical genetics.
