Cybersecurity: Morocco Under Pressure Amid Increasing Attacks

The rise in cyberattacks presents Morocco with an unprecedented challenge: to safeguard a rapidly expanding digital space while maintaining its sovereignty. Amidst notable incidents, international pressure, and accelerated digital transformation, the Kingdom is entering a new era where cybersecurity has become a national priority.
A Massive and Constant Threat
In recent years, cyberattacks have escalated significantly. The incident affecting the National Social Security Fund (CNSS), which resulted in the data breach of millions of insured individuals, serves as a stark reminder of existing vulnerabilities. Since that event, the trend has worsened considerably.
By 2025, the General Directorate for the Security of Information Systems (DGSSI) reported 879 major cyberattacks, over a hundred of which required direct intervention. Simultaneously, more than 20 million intrusion attempts were detected within just six months, highlighting the ongoing pressure on national systems.
A Country Under Increased Targeting
Beyond the sheer volume of attacks, their nature is evolving. Morocco is now among the most targeted African countries for state-sponsored cyberattacks. This geopolitical aspect reflects the Kingdom’s growing strategic importance in regional economic and digital exchanges.
Critical infrastructures, public institutions, and large businesses have become prime targets, set against an international backdrop marked by rising tensions in cyberspace.
Digital Sovereignty in Focus
In light of these risks, cybersecurity has emerged as a cornerstone of national sovereignty. Morocco’s strategy looking towards 2030 aims to build a resilient digital ecosystem capable of proactively preventing, detecting, and effectively responding to threats.
The emphasis is on protecting sensitive infrastructures, enhancing governance, and developing local skills. The goal is clear: reduce technological dependency and strengthen the country’s autonomy in a field that has become highly strategic.
An Issue Beyond the Technical
Today, cybersecurity is no longer just the domain of IT experts. It impacts the entire economy, institutions, and citizens. Data and system protection has become an essential condition for digital trust.
In this context, Morocco is racing against time: to secure its digital transformation while laying the groundwork for sustainable digital sovereignty.
