Deadly Fire in Hong Kong: Death Toll Rises to 55

An Unprecedented Catastrophe
The devastating fire that engulfed a residential complex in northern Hong Kong has claimed 55 lives, marking it as the deadliest tragedy in the modern history of the Chinese Special Administrative Region.
Rapid Spread of Flames
The blaze, which broke out on Wednesday around 2:50 PM, quickly spread to seven of the eight buildings in the Wang Fuk Court complex located in Tai Po. Fifty-one individuals, including one firefighter, perished at the scene, while four others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
Dozens Hospitalized
According to local press reports, 68 individuals remain hospitalized, with 16 in critical condition. Rescue operations are ongoing, as nearly 280 residents have yet to be located.
Four Towers Secured, Search Continues
By Thursday at 6:00 AM, four of the 31-story buildings were secured. Emergency teams are now focusing on locating the missing residents and completely extinguishing any remaining hotspots.
Authorities’ Response
The Chief Executive, John Lee, has referred to the incident as a “major catastrophe” and has ordered a comprehensive audit of all social housing undergoing renovations. The electoral campaign scheduled for December 7 has been suspended to allow for a full mobilization of resources.
Condolences from Beijing
Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed his condolences and called for maximum efforts to mitigate human casualties.
Investigation Leads and Arrests
The buildings had been under renovation since July 2024. Three individuals—two directors and a consultant from the construction company—have been arrested for involuntary manslaughter. Investigators mention the use of non-compliant materials, particularly highly flammable polystyrene foam blocking elevator shaft windows, as well as scaffolding nets that did not meet fire safety standards.
The police have also raided the company’s offices and seized several documents.
Towards a Thorough Investigation
The government has promised comprehensive investigations, including criminal inquiries, to establish the exact causes of this unprecedented tragedy.
