Donald Trump Declares “Liberation Day” for U.S. Trade Policy

On April 2, American President Donald Trump proclaimed this date as “Liberation Day” for U.S. trade policy, announcing an ambitious tariff plan in response to what he called unfair trade practices. During a ceremony held in the White House Rose Garden, surrounded by members of his Cabinet, Republican Congressional leaders, and workers from various sectors, including the automotive and steel industries, Trump declared, “My fellow Americans, this is Liberation Day.”
The president unveiled a new 10% tariff on all imported goods, along with additional taxes tailored to each of the approximately 60 countries identified by his advisors as maintaining the strictest trade barriers against American products. Among the countries affected, China will face tariffs of 34%, India 26%, Japan 24%, and European Union countries 20%.
Additionally, a 25% tariff will be applied to automobiles exported to the United States.
Trump explained that his new tariff policies would “make America wealthy again,” holding up a sign displaying reciprocal tariffs that vary by country. He also noted that April 2, 2025, would be a memorable day, symbolizing the rebirth of American industry.
However, this decision raises concerns, particularly among Democratic lawmakers in Congress and many economists, who warn that increasing taxes on imported goods could trigger an economic shock, affecting significant purchases for Americans, such as food, automobiles, and homes.
