Drama off Lampedusa: Around Twenty Dead and Missing in Shipwreck

Another tragedy in the Mediterranean: a shipwreck near the Italian island of Lampedusa has reportedly resulted in the deaths of around twenty individuals, according to a spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), who spoke on the social media platform X on Wednesday.

“A deep sense of anguish in response to this new shipwreck off Lampedusa, where the UNHCR is supporting survivors,” stated Filippo Ungaro. He noted that approximately 20 bodies have been recovered, while a similar number of individuals remain missing.
