First Robotic Surgery in Morocco Performed Exclusively by Moroccan Doctors
Casablanca – Dr. Abdeljalil Haddath, a professor of urological surgery at Mohammed VI University of Health Sciences, has announced that his medical team has successfully completed the first robotic surgery in Morocco using the Da Vinci system, performed entirely by Moroccan physicians.
This cutting-edge technology, known as robotic surgery, allows for interventions without traditional open surgery. The robot is operated remotely via a console that provides the surgeon with extreme precision and an enhanced view magnified up to ten times, thereby reducing postoperative complications and improving clinical outcomes.
Dr. Haddath clarified that the team has begun utilizing this technique primarily for prostatectomies related to localized cancers or benign hyperplasia causing urinary issues. These procedures are complex, as the prostate is located in an anatomically challenging region surrounded by sensitive nerves linked to sexual function and urinary continence.
The results have been very encouraging: patients can stand up and resume their activities within one to two days, marking a significant advancement compared to traditional interventions that require longer hospital stays.
The team plans to soon expand the use of this technology to partial nephrectomy for treating kidney tumors, aiming to preserve kidney function while minimizing the need for invasive surgery.
Dr. Haddath also emphasized the growing integration of artificial intelligence in these advanced surgical systems. The AI assists surgeons in accurately locating tumors and alerts them when they are near risk areas, thus reducing potential complications.
