Heavy Rainfall: Exceptional Mobilization of SRM Casa-Settat to Protect the Region

In a context marked by weather disturbances announced by the General Directorate of Meteorology, the region of Casablanca-Settat is among the areas expected to experience significant rainfall, with local accumulations potentially reaching between 20 and 40 mm. In response to this situation, the regional multi-service company (SRM) Casa-Settat has initiated an exceptional intervention plan to anticipate risks associated with bad weather as the year comes to a close.

As soon as the weather alerts were issued, an expanded operational system was activated across the entire regional territory. This plan involves mobilizing over 780 specialists in liquid sanitation, supported by more than 100 machinery and technical equipment. In the Greater Casablanca area, the deployed resources include 53 combined vacuum trucks and 66 pumps and motor pumps, as detailed by Kamal Gragaï, director in charge of liquid sanitation operations at SRM Casa-Settat.

On-the-ground actions are primarily focused on the most vulnerable sectors, including low-lying areas and risk zones. These efforts include cleaning and dredging the networks, enhanced monitoring of sanitation infrastructure—such as drains, storm basins, overflow outlets, and pumping stations—as well as the removal of accumulated water. Teams are on duty around the clock, day and night, in close coordination with local authorities and the 12 provincial and prefectural divisions. Regionally, this system mobilizes over 1,210 agents, including 758 directly from SRM and 452 from subcontracting, along with more than 340 pieces of equipment, including 69 vacuum trucks and 100 pumps. A crisis management control center and local units have also been established to ensure real-time monitoring.

In the same spirit, SRM’s customer service center has been strengthened to effectively handle citizens’ calls and facilitate the rapid deployment of teams to the affected sites. This organization is part of a continuous preventive approach, developed well in advance of heavy rainfall periods.

In terms of investments, the year 2025 saw the implementation of structural projects that have successfully addressed 14 problem areas, in addition to over 19 more treated through targeted interventions. Among the notable achievements is the construction of an underground gallery in Mohammedia, extending over 3 kilometers at a depth of 16 meters, completed in just six months instead of the initially planned 18, with a budget of 140 million dirhams. In Sidi Messaoud, within the Casablanca metropolis, a storm basin with a capacity of 17,000 m³, complemented by 4 kilometers of rainwater collectors and 5 kilometers of sewage networks, was developed with an investment of 116 million dirhams.

Thanks to these proactive initiatives and large-scale infrastructures, SRM Casa-Settat is sustainably strengthening the resilience of the regional sanitation network. This mobilization helps mitigate the impact of rainy episodes on both populations and public facilities, ensuring a more effective and secure management of rainwater and wastewater in an increasingly demanding climatic context.
