India Plans to Launch a “Secure and Affordable” Artificial Intelligence Model

India is set to soon launch its own “secure and affordable” artificial intelligence (AI) model, announced Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, on Thursday.
During a press conference, the minister revealed that scientists, researchers, developers, and programmers are actively working on several foundational models. “At this pace, the Indian AI model could be ready within six months,” he added.
This initiative is part of the “India AI” program, launched last March with a budget of 103 billion rupees (approximately $1.2 billion), aimed at positioning India as a reliable technological leader, offering ethical AI solutions in the coming years.
The minister also noted that this model will be based on a computing power of nearly 18,693 graphics processing units (GPUs), which is almost nine times more than the open-source Chinese model DeepSeek, and two-thirds of the computational power of ChatGPT, developed by the American company OpenAI. At its launch, the Indian AI infrastructure will consist of approximately 10,000 GPUs, with a gradual addition of the remaining 8,693 GPUs.
Vaishnaw emphasized that the deployment of this AI model will adhere to safety and ethical standards, and that a dedicated institute for AI security will be established.
This announcement comes as global competition in the field of AI intensifies, marked by the emergence of the Chinese model R1 from DeepSeek, which has disrupted Silicon Valley and challenged U.S. dominance in this rapidly growing sector. It coincides with U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of the “StarGate” project, a $500 billion investment plan aimed at strengthening AI-related infrastructure.
