Indonesia: Over 1,000 Dead After Floods

A Significant Human Toll
The death toll from the recent floods and landslides in Indonesia has risen to 1,006, with an additional 217 people reported missing, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) announced on Saturday.
Aceh: The Hardest Hit Province
The province of Aceh, still haunted by the deadly tsunami of 2004, remains the most affected area with 415 fatalities, up from 411 in the previous report, stated Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for the BNPB, during a press conference.
Northern and Western Sumatra Heavily Impacted
The provinces of North and West Sumatra have recorded 349 and 242 deaths, respectively, confirming the significant human toll of these natural disasters.
Thousands Injured and Displaced
The severe weather that struck two weeks ago also resulted in over 5,400 injuries, with approximately 1.2 million people currently residing in temporary shelters, according to authorities.
Reconstruction Costs Estimated at Over $3 Billion
Reconstruction needs may reach 51.82 trillion Indonesian rupiahs, equivalent to nearly $3.1 billion, highlighting the substantial economic impact of the disaster.
Weather Alerts Remain in Effect Across Several Regions
The Indonesian Meteorology and Climatology Agency (BMKG) has issued warnings regarding the persistence of extreme weather conditions, with heavy rainfall expected particularly in Aceh, Sumatra, Bengkulu, and Banten.
