Ivory Coast Selected to Host the Regional Africa Office of the Green Climate Fund

Côte d’Ivoire Officially Designated as Regional HQ for Green Climate Fund in Africa

Côte d’Ivoire has been officially selected to host the regional office for Africa of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), as announced by official sources in Abidjan on Saturday.

The decision to establish the regional office in Abidjan, which will oversee West Africa, Central Africa, and part of North Africa, was made during the 44th meeting of the GCF Board held from March 25 to 28 in Incheon, South Korea, according to a statement from the Ivorian government.

This choice is driven by the confidence that the UN institution has in Côte d’Ivoire’s stability, economic dynamism, and commitment to climate action, further solidifying the country’s position as a key player in climate efforts across the continent.

“With this strategic establishment, the Green Climate Fund aims to significantly enhance the impact of its interventions through improved coordination of climate projects, increased technical support for states, and facilitation of access to climate financing,” the document states.

The opening of this regional office presents significant opportunities for Côte d’Ivoire and the entire continent, especially in areas such as sustainable and resilient agriculture, renewable energy development, sustainable management of natural resources, and combating the effects of climate change, the same source highlighted.

As part of its strategy to strengthen its global presence, the GCF Board has also designated several host cities for its new regional offices. Nairobi will cover East and Southern Africa, Panama City will serve Latin America and the Caribbean, while Jordan will host the office responsible for Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
