Launch of “Shabab Labs”: An Innovative Initiative for Youth in Morocco

The Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, in collaboration with UNESCO, has launched “Shabab Labs,” an innovative action-research program aimed at enhancing youth engagement in Morocco. Designed by and for young people, this initiative seeks to establish innovation labs in Youth Houses across the Kingdom to promote participatory research and civic involvement.
Thus, Morocco becomes the first country to implement this initiative stemming from UNESCO’s international “Youth as Researchers” program. This groundbreaking step underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to its youth and their future.
A Pioneering Program for Youth Engagement
In the initial phase of the program, 20 doctoral researchers will be selected and trained to mentor youth in Youth Houses throughout the country. These spaces will provide young people the opportunity to collaborate, experiment, and propose innovative solutions to local challenges. Through this approach, the “Shabab Labs” aim to foster active civic engagement and encourage youth to become agents of change in their communities.
A Space for Experimentation and Collaboration
The Shabab Labs will serve as experimental hubs where young individuals can apply participatory research methods while addressing local societal issues. In collaboration with local stakeholders, participants will have the chance to propose concrete solutions to the challenges they face in their communities, thereby strengthening their civic commitment.
The doctoral researchers overseeing these projects will receive in-depth training provided by UNESCO. Their role will include guiding young people in acquiring research skills, supervising the implementation and publication of their work, and raising awareness on local issues.
A Unique Opportunity for Researchers
This program also presents a valuable opportunity for doctoral candidates, enabling them to develop field experience and refine their academic and teaching skills. In addition to receiving an official certificate from UNESCO and the ministry, their research will be published as part of the initiative, providing significant recognition in the fields of social and participatory research.
The “Shabab Labs” thus represent a significant turning point in youth policy and social innovation in Morocco, providing young people with the framework to realize their ideas and actively participate in the development of their communities.
