Marie-Louise Eta: The First Female Coach in the Bundesliga

The German club Union Berlin has announced the appointment of Marie-Louise Eta as the head coach of the first team until the end of the season, marking a historic decision in Bundesliga.

A Historic Appointment

Marie-Louise Eta, previously the coach of the U19 team, becomes the first woman to lead a top-tier team in Germany, representing a major advancement for European football.

A Challenging Sports Context

This appointment comes after the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart following a 1-3 defeat to FC Heidenheim, the last-place team in the league.

The Berlin club is experiencing a difficult period, with only two wins in 14 matches since the winter break.

Mission: Bundesliga Survival

As interim coach, Marie-Louise Eta will have the primary goal of ensuring Union Berlin‘s safety in the Bundesliga.

“Staying in the Bundesliga is not yet guaranteed. I am happy to take on this demanding role,” she stated.

Reorganization of the Coaching Staff

The club has also ended its collaboration with assistant coaches Danilo de Souza and Kevin McKenna, in light of results deemed insufficient.

A Concerning Situation

General manager Horst Heldt acknowledged that the second half of the season has been “absolutely disappointing,” emphasizing the urgency of earning points to avoid relegation.

A Turning Point for the Club

This decision marks a turning point for Union Berlin, which hopes to revitalize its season through this historic appointment.
