Marrakech 2026: An Edition Marked by Renewal

The city of Marrakech is hosting the 14th edition of the “Zahria of Marrakech,” the season of the bitter orange flower, organized by the Muniya Association in partnership with national institutions, from March 22 to April 12, 2026. This year’s theme is “Renewal,” set against an exceptional natural backdrop and within the framework of a new legislative measure aimed at enhancing the protection of Moroccan heritage.
An Extraordinary Spring Reviving Nature
The Marrakech region has experienced unprecedented rainfall, revitalizing nature after years of drought, in what can be described as a “spring of miracles.” This transformation is reflected in the bitter orange trees, adorned with bright white flowers that fill the air with their fragrance throughout the city.
The bitter orange flower is not just a natural phenomenon; it also symbolizes the cycle of life and renewal: on the same tree coexist the fruits of the past, the buds of the future, and the flowers of the present, illustrating the continuity of time.
A Rich Cultural Program Across the Region
To celebrate this season, the “Zahria of Marrakech” offers a diverse program of cultural and artistic activities that will take place in various areas of the region, aiming to bring this heritage closer to a broader audience and to strengthen its presence in society.
International Recognition Enhancing Heritage
This season holds international significance, having been included on the list of intangible cultural heritage of the Islamic world (ICESCO), reflecting its historical and cultural value. The Muniya Association is also working toward its inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage list, a step aimed at enhancing its international visibility.
A New Law for Heritage Protection in Morocco
The discussion surrounding Law 33-22, adopted in June 2025, is a key moment for this edition, marking a significant advancement in public involvement in heritage protection. This law notably aims to bolster coordination between institutions and stakeholders to ensure effective and sustainable protection of cultural heritage.
It will also announce the creation of a committee of experts comprising specialists in architecture, urban planning, and heritage, aimed at preserving the “riad” as one of the major elements of Marrakech’s architectural identity.
A Traveling Season Extending to Universities and Rural Areas
For the first time, the season extends beyond the medina to include academic institutions and rural areas such as Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, Cadi Ayyad University, the town of Kelaa des Sraghna, and the Setti Fatma region in the High Atlas.
These activities include scientific meetings and sensory workshops with the participation of experts in perfumery and aromatherapy, thus enhancing the academic and practical dimension of the event.
Diverse Activities Over 22 Days
This edition’s program includes several cultural activities, such as:
- Ceremonies for distilling bitter orange flower water at historical and cultural sites
- Workshops on traditional weaving and bread making
- Storytelling performances and popular heritage narratives
- Literary and intellectual gatherings
- Tributes to prominent figures in culture and architecture
Muniya Association Marrakech: A Commitment to Living Heritage
The Muniya Association of Marrakech continues its efforts to preserve and promote Moroccan heritage, transforming the “Zahria” into a platform for cultural and social renewal. This edition solidifies Marrakech’s status as the world capital of living heritage and its ambition to enhance its presence in the collective memory of humanity.
