UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Condemns Ongoing Military Escalation in the Middle East

On Saturday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the ongoing military escalation in the Middle East, expressing that it jeopardizes international peace and security.

“I condemn the current military escalation in the Middle East (…) and I call for an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation,” the UN leader emphasized in a statement released by his spokesperson’s office, urging all parties to resume negotiations “immediately.”

In this context, he reaffirmed that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful resolution of international disputes, in full respect of international law, particularly the United Nations Charter.

“The Charter forms the foundation for maintaining international peace and security,” he noted.

Additionally, an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council is scheduled for Saturday at 16:00 (21:00 GMT) to address the situation in the Middle East.
