Morocco and Austria Strengthen Their Archival Cooperation

Austrian State Archives and Royal Archives of Morocco Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Strengthen Cooperation

On Wednesday in Vienna, the Austrian State Archives and the Royal Archives of Morocco signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing collaboration between the two institutions. The MoU was signed by Helmut Wohnout, the Director General of the Austrian State Archives, and Bahija Simou, the Director of the Royal Archives of Morocco.

The primary goal of this MoU is to institutionalize cooperation between the two parties, facilitating the exchange of expertise and best practices in the field of archiving, as well as enriching their respective collections. This agreement is particularly significant as it is the first signed by the Austrian State Archives with an African and Arab institution, marking an important milestone in bilateral relations.

This agreement builds on a longstanding and multifaceted relationship between the two nations, founded on the promotion of peace and dialogue between civilizations. For over two centuries, Austria and Morocco have established strong connections through diplomatic, cultural, and scientific exchanges.

The signing ceremony was attended by Azzeddine Farhane, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to Vienna, and it forms part of the celebrations marking over 240 years of diplomatic relations and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

During her working visit to Vienna from February 17 to 21, Ms. Simou met with several Austrian figures from the fields of archiving, academia, and culture.
