Morocco and Mauritania Sign Agreement to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation in Electricity and Renewable Energy
On Thursday in Rabat, Morocco and Mauritania signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at bolstering their bilateral cooperation in the electricity and renewable energy sectors. This initiative seeks to electrify rural areas, promote clean energy, and establish electricity interconnection projects between the two countries.
The agreement was signed by Leila Benali, Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, and Mohamed Ould Khaled, Mauritania’s Minister of Energy and Mines. It also encompasses aspects related to the harmonization of electrical standards and the sharing of expertise in electrical safety. The protocol outlines the exchange of technologies and best practices, as well as training programs designed to enhance human skills in network management and energy security.
During the signing ceremony, Leila Benali emphasized that this agreement marks the beginning of a new phase of cooperation between the two countries in key sectors such as renewable energy, green hydrogen, and sustainable development. She highlighted the significant role of this partnership in diversifying energy supply sources and ensuring the stability of electrical networks in the region.
The Mauritanian Minister praised the agreement as a symbol of the fraternal relations between Mauritania and Morocco, underscoring the considerable potential of both nations to emerge as leaders in the fields of renewable energy and electricity. He also mentioned strategic joint projects such as the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline and green hydrogen initiatives.
This agreement is part of an ongoing dynamic of consultation and continuous coordination between the two countries, aimed at intensifying bilateral relations and achieving the common aspirations of the heads of state of both nations, His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.
The Mauritanian Minister’s working visit provided an opportunity to discuss other sustainable development projects and brought together several officials from both countries, including leaders from major energy sector organizations, further reinforcing the commitment of both nations to collaborate in the energy domain.
