Morocco Prepares Its Airport Infrastructure for the 2030 World Cup with a Massive Investment

In preparation for the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal, the kingdom has announced an ambitious program aimed at expanding and modernizing its airport infrastructure. During its latest board meeting, chaired by the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdelssamad Kayouh, the National Airports Office (ONDA) confirmed an investment of more than 13.2 billion dirhams for the year 2025.
The priorities of the expansion program
The program will primarily focus on extending the airports in the major host cities of the tournament, including Casablanca, Tangier, Marrakech, Agadir, and Fes. These airports will be significantly enlarged to accommodate the massive influx of international visitors expected during this global event. Construction is also underway on new terminals in Rabat and Tetouan, progressing at a swift pace.
Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca: A key project
Casablanca’s Mohammed V Airport, the country’s main air gateway, is receiving special attention. The construction of a new terminal, with a capacity to host 20 million passengers per year, has already commenced. This terminal is slated for completion by 2029 and is part of a series of projects aimed at enhancing Morocco’s airport capacity ahead of the 2030 World Cup. In the meantime, a new transit area has been opened to improve the travel experience.
Growth in air traffic and positive financial results
Morocco has experienced substantial growth in air traffic, recording a historic 32.7 million passengers in 2024, representing a 21% increase from the previous year. This rise is largely attributed to the opening of new international routes connecting Morocco to several European cities, as well as the expansion of domestic connections.
From a financial perspective, ONDA also reported strong results, with a revenue of 5.4 billion dirhams in 2024, reflecting a 14% increase. The operating profit surged to 1.9 billion dirhams, enabling ONDA to improve its self-financing capacity and to prepare for its future expansion projects.
A long-term vision for the airport sector
For 2025, ONDA anticipates another increase in passenger traffic, estimating that over 37.6 million travelers will use Moroccan airports. The “Airports 2030” program, aimed at transforming and modernizing the country’s airport infrastructure, will continue to be implemented with ambitious objectives, intended to meet the demands of the 2030 World Cup and align with international standards of efficiency and service.
The ONDA board of directors unanimously praised this strategy, emphasizing the importance of well-managed and efficient airports in supporting economic development, tourism, and Morocco’s international attractiveness. The Moroccan aviation sector thus appears well-prepared to meet the challenges of the 2030 World Cup, focusing on innovation, foresight, and optimal quality of service.
