Morocco Reaffirms Its Support for the African Medicines Agency in Addis Ababa

The Morocco reaffirmed its full support for the implementation process of the African Medicines Agency this Saturday in Addis Ababa. It emphasized its commitment to accompany this continental institution during this crucial phase, ensuring it becomes a central pillar in medicine regulation and the strengthening of health security in Africa.

Recognition of Progress Made

This position was expressed by the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amin Tahraoui, during a high-level meeting focused on accelerating the establishment of the Agency. This meeting took place on the occasion of the 39th Summit of African Heads of State and Government, held on February 14 and 15 in Addis Ababa.

The minister praised the advances made in the implementation process, recalling Morocco’s active support, notably during the appointment of the Agency’s Director-General.

A Strategic Step for Health Security

Under the slogan “Accelerating the implementation of the African Medicines Agency and full ratification of the creation treaty to provide quality medical products and enhance health security in Africa,” the minister highlighted the strategic importance of this phase in reinforcing the Agency’s role and called for continued cooperation among member states.

He specified that the Agency represents a central tool for harmonizing regulatory frameworks related to medicines and medical devices, ensuring the quality and safety of products, improving supply chains, and supporting the health sovereignty of African countries.

Need for Adequate Resources

The minister stressed the importance of equipping the Agency with the necessary human, technical, and financial resources to effectively carry out its missions, considering its crucial role in supporting national health systems and enhancing preparedness for health crises.

Finally, he asserted that the Agency represents an essential lever for building collective health security on a continental scale, commending the role of Rwanda, the host country of the Agency, and its continuous commitment from the creation phase to the current implementation phase.
