Morocco Engages in the 57th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission

Morocco, represented by a delegation from the High Commission for Planning (HCP), participated in the 57th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC), held in New York from March 3 to 6.

As the principal body under the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the UNSC is responsible for reviewing and adopting international statistical methodologies and standards. It also ensures the good governance of the international statistical system.

Headed by Oussama Marseli, the HCP’s Director of Statistics, the Moroccan delegation took part in various scheduled sessions along with parallel events organized for this occasion. Additionally, they participated in two seminars on artificial intelligence and GDP held in anticipation of the current session.

Marseli emphasized that Morocco’s participation this year holds special significance as the Kingdom has become a member of the UN Statistical Commission for the period 2026-2029. For the first time, it was elected as a member of the Bureau of the Statistical Commission during the 57th session, in the capacity of rapporteur.

During the session, the Moroccan delegation made several interventions addressing major topics on the international statistical agenda, including social and demographic statistics, national accounts, economic and environmental accounting, as well as governance statistics.

“These contributions have highlighted Morocco’s commitment to developing modern and integrated statistical systems, in addition to national initiatives aimed at improving the quality and use of statistical data for the formulation and evaluation of public policies,” he stated.

Marseli also noted that Morocco delivered a statement on behalf of the African Group regarding several agenda items related to indicators and data for monitoring the 2030 Agenda, capacity development in statistics, and international statistical classifications.

Moreover, Morocco represented the Arab member countries of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) concerning social and demographic statistics and national accounting.

At the parallel events organized alongside the Commission, the Moroccan delegation showcased the national experience in integrating linguistic questions into population and housing censuses, alongside the approach adopted for the General Population and Housing Census 2024.

Morocco’s participation in this event also provided an opportunity to share the Kingdom’s experience related to the cooperation between the HCP and Statistics Denmark, focusing on best practices derived from long-term statistical cooperation partnerships, the head of the Moroccan delegation added.

In conclusion, Marseli emphasized that participating in the UNSC session strengthens Morocco’s presence and contribution to the international statistical system, promotes national experiences, and consolidates cooperation with regional and international partners in the field of statistics.
