Over 8,000 Deaths Due to Cholera and Mpox Epidemics

The cholera and mpox outbreaks have resulted in over 8,000 deaths in Africa since the beginning of 2025, according to the African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Africa).

Africa has recorded 132,008 cases of mpox since the start of the year, including 40,138 confirmed cases and 952 deaths, as stated by the organization during a recent press briefing.

Additionally, a total of 308,935 cholera cases and 7,131 deaths have been confirmed across the continent since the beginning of the year, according to CDC Africa.

The rising cholera cases in Africa are primarily attributed to insufficient access to clean water and sanitation, compounded by overwhelmed healthcare systems and the presence of multiple public health emergencies, the CDC based in Addis Ababa added.
