Qatar Energy Suspends LNG Production Following Iranian Attacks

On March 2, 2026, Qatar Energy announced the suspension of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production after Iranian attacks targeted two of its operational facilities. This decision comes amid Iranian strikes on several Gulf nations in retaliation for a U.S.-Israeli attack that occurred over the weekend.

Details of the Suspension

In an official statement, the public company specified:
“Due to a military attack on our facilities in the industrial city of Ras Laffan and in the industrial city of Mesaieed, Qatar Energy has suspended the production of liquefied natural gas and related products.”

Attacks Targeting Infrastructure

Before this announcement, Qatar’s Ministry of Defense disclosed that two Iranian drones had targeted an electricity plant and an energy facility within the country.

One drone struck a water reservoir associated with a power plant in Mesaieed, located south of Doha. The other drone targeted an energy facility in Ras Laffan, situated on the northern coast, which is Qatar’s main LNG production site.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported as a result of these attacks.

Qatar: A Key Player in the Global LNG Market

Qatar stands among the world’s largest producers of liquefied natural gas, alongside the United States, Australia, and Russia. The country shares the largest gas field with Iran, known as the North Field, which accounts for approximately 10% of the world’s known natural gas reserves, according to Qatar Energy.
