Resolution 2797: A Major Advancement for the Moroccan Sahara

During a symposium held Saturday in Casablanca, focused on the UN Security Council’s adoption of resolution 2797 concerning the Moroccan Sahara, participants hailed this development as a historic step that underscores the wise, proactive, and visionary diplomacy spearheaded by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

The president of the Moroccan Institute of International Relations (IMRI), Jawad Kerdoudi, emphasized that Morocco has engaged in a sustained diplomatic drive in recent years to defend its territorial integrity. He especially highlighted the importance of the Kingdom’s presentation of its autonomy initiative in 2007, which has since become the central reference for any solution to the regional dispute.

Mr. Kerdoudi also shed light on the decisive role of royal diplomacy, grounded in a clear and strategic vision. He recalled the major initiatives undertaken by the Kingdom, including numerous royal visits to Africa and Morocco’s return to the African Union in 2017, which have strengthened the country’s alliances and consolidated its presence on the continental stage.

Discussing Morocco’s ongoing efforts to complete its territorial integrity, he noted that these actions have intensified since the emergence of the artificial conflict surrounding the Moroccan Sahara, fuelled by adversaries of national unity.

For his part, Abdelhafid Oualalou, vice-president of IMRI, underlined the special context marked by the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Green March. This commemoration comes after the adoption of resolution 2797, which recognizes the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a serious and credible basis for resolving the regional dispute. He described this advancement as a “major breakthrough” for royal diplomacy and a strong signal paving the way for a new era of stability and prosperity for the entire region.

The meeting organized by IMRI also revisited the historic significance of the Green March, a founding event that embodies the unity, cohesion, and solidarity of the Moroccan nation, remaining one of the most emblematic moments in the contemporary history of the Kingdom.
