Sahara: The Netherlands Supports Morocco’s Proposed Autonomy Plan

A “Realistic” Position According to The Hague
The Netherlands has expressed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara, describing it as the “most feasible” solution to resolve this regional dispute. This position was announced by Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen during a press conference in Rabat.
A Statement Following a Bilateral Meeting
This stance follows talks between Tom Berendsen and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, as part of a working visit on April 7 and 8. The conclusions of these discussions were documented in a joint statement.
Support for United Nations Efforts
The Netherlands has also reaffirmed its support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797. Furthermore, they back the efforts of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, to revive negotiations among the concerned parties.
Aiming for a Sustainable Political Solution
According to The Hague, discussions should be part of a dynamic process aimed at achieving a “fair, durable, and mutually acceptable” political solution, using Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a negotiating framework.
A Commitment to Act on Diplomatic and Economic Levels
Finally, the Netherlands indicated that it would align its actions, both diplomatically and economically, with this position, while ensuring respect for international law.
