Sao Tome and Principe’s Foreign Minister Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Territorial Integrity

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Communities of the Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, Mrs. Ilza Maria dos Santos Amado Vaz, reiterated her country’s unwavering position in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region, during a press conference held on Thursday in Rabat.

Following her talks with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Living Abroad, Mr. Nasser Bourita, Mrs. Amado Vaz affirmed her country’s full support for the autonomy plan proposed by the Kingdom of Morocco, describing it as the only realistic and credible solution to resolve this regional dispute.

She also praised the efforts of the United Nations as the exclusive framework for achieving a realistic, practical, and sustainable solution concerning the Moroccan Sahara.

The head of Sao Tomean diplomacy expressed satisfaction with the progress made by Morocco in the socio-economic development of the Southern Provinces, thanks to the New Development Model, which promotes stability, security, and regional integration.

Mrs. Amado Vaz emphasized that Sao Tome and Principe’s stance aligns with the international momentum initiated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, in favor of the autonomy plan and Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

For his part, Mr. Bourita thanked Mrs. Amado Vaz for her country’s consistent and firm support regarding the Moroccan identity of the Sahara, a position echoed by numerous Sao Tomean officials in various international and regional forums. The Minister also welcomed the opening of a General Consulate of the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe in Laâyoune in January 2020.
