Six Dead and Several Missing in Drownings on Australia’s East Coast

This weekend, at least six people lost their lives due to drownings in Australia, where massive waves were battering the East Coast, according to local authorities.

Emergency services attempted to rescue two fishermen swept away by the waves at Wattamolla Beach, but one of them did not survive despite resuscitation efforts. The second fisherman, a 14-year-old boy, was transported to the hospital in stable condition, the New South Wales police reported on Sunday.

On Saturday, swells reaching up to 3.5 meters took another fisherman in southern New South Wales. In total, three drownings were reported in this state, while another victim lost their life near Melbourne in the southeast of the country.

Additionally, two people have been missing at sea since Friday—one off the coast of Sydney and the other near Melbourne—with search operations continuing in an effort to locate them.

On Thursday, Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) had issued a warning about “dangerous” surfing conditions due to strong swells along the coasts of New South Wales and Victoria.
