Spain Reaffirms Support for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative for the Sahara

Spain Reiterates Support for Moroccan Autonomy Initiative
On Thursday, Spain reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, describing it as the “most serious, realistic, and credible” proposal to resolve the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Following a meeting in Madrid with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares, emphasized the significance of this issue for Morocco. He praised the “serious and credible” efforts made by the Kingdom within the framework of the United Nations to seek a mutually acceptable solution.
First presented in 2007, the Moroccan autonomy initiative is seen by Spain as the most concrete basis for ending the conflict. This stance aligns with a growing international momentum, spearheaded by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, advocating for Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.
The Spanish minister reminded that this momentum is supported by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2756, which encourages the parties to capitalize on this positive momentum.
Through its clear position, Spain reaffirms its commitment to a lasting political solution, based on compromise and in line with international efforts to resolve this regional dispute.
