The CAF President Resolves the Debate on a Possible Postponement of the 2027 AFCON

The Confederation of African Football has put an end to speculation regarding a potential postponement of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, confirming that the tournament will take place as planned in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
No Postponement Considered by CAF
The African governing body has formally denied reports suggesting that the tournament would be delayed to 2028 due to an alleged lack of preparedness among the host countries, following a meeting of its Executive Committee.
Patrice Motsepe Reaffirms CAF’s Commitment
Speaking after the meeting, CAF President Patrice Motsepe from South Africa emphasized the organization’s firm commitment to hosting the tournament in East Africa.
“We have made significant efforts to organize the AFCON in this region, and our commitment remains unwavering. We are confident that Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda will host a tournament of the highest caliber,” he stated.
He also assured that CAF will work closely with the host countries to ensure compliance with the highest standards for both infrastructure and logistics.
AFCON Scheduled Before the Elections in Kenya
While the exact dates of the tournament have not yet been officially announced, CAF is prioritizing an organization in June and July 2027, which would be one month prior to the general elections set for August in Kenya.
Concerns Expressed from the Kenyan Side
On the other hand, the president of the local organizing committee in Kenya, Nicholas Musonye, suggested that a potential postponement to 2028 could be advantageous for his country due to the political climate surrounding the elections and security concerns that such a significant continental event could raise.
