Minister of Foreign Affairs Receives Montpellier Mayor
On Tuesday in Rabat, Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Living Abroad, welcomed Michaël Delafosse, the mayor of Montpellier, who is currently visiting Morocco.
Following their meeting, Mr. Delafosse expressed his deep appreciation for the historical friendship between the Kingdom of Morocco and the French Republic. He emphasized the importance of building this relationship on foundations of equality and mutual respect, stating that “we have much to learn from each other.” He also conveyed a shared desire to embark on a new chapter in this cooperation.
In this context, the mayor of Montpellier advocated for the engagement of all relevant stakeholders—local elected officials, representatives from cultural, sporting, and academic spheres—to promote student and researcher mobility, while strengthening collaboration between the two nations.
He took this opportunity to reaffirm his city’s support for France’s official stance regarding Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
Additionally, Mr. Delafosse indicated that discussions focused on Montpellier’s commitment to support Morocco in its projects, particularly concerning the city of Fez, with which Montpellier is twinned. This cooperation is part of the preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly organized by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal.
Finally, the French mayor praised the active role of the Moroccan community in France, particularly in Montpellier, highlighting its essential contribution to strengthening bilateral relations. He underscored the human, cultural, and professional richness that this diaspora represents, acting as a bridge and a source of innovation between the two countries.
