The United States Falls to Belgium in Friendly Match (5-2)

The U.S. men’s soccer team suffered a defeat against Belgium (5-2) on Saturday in Atlanta during a friendly match, just two and a half months ahead of the kickoff for the 2026 World Cup, which they will host.
In front of nearly 67,000 spectators at a venue set to host several World Cup matches, including a semifinal, the United States started positively, taking the lead with a goal from Weston McKennie in the 39th minute.
However, the Belgians quickly responded, with Zeno Debast equalizing in the 45th minute, followed by goals from Amadou Onana (53rd minute), Charles de Ketelaere converting a penalty (59th minute), and a brace from Dodi Lukebakio (68th and 82nd minutes) before a final U.S. goal by Patrick Agyemang in the 87th minute.
In a post-match statement to the press, U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino underscored the importance of facing high-level opponents in preparation for the World Cup, asserting that such matches are a valuable step in the training process.
“We need matches against great teams to arrive at the World Cup at our best level,” stated Pochettino.
“It’s good to have confidence, but if we want to win the World Cup, we first have to get past the group stage. Do you really think Paraguay won’t put up a fight?” added the former manager of Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain.
As a co-host of the tournament alongside Mexico and Canada, the United States will compete in Group D, along with Paraguay, Australia, and the winner of the playoff between Kosovo and Turkey.
The U.S. team will continue its preparation with a match against Portugal, scheduled for Tuesday, also in Atlanta.
