The village of “Saifkom” in Safi focuses on environmental journalism to enhance community awareness.

For the sixteenth consecutive year, the city of Safi has hosted remarkable environmental activities and awareness campaigns, celebrating the ongoing acquisition of the Blue Flag, an international label awarded by the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment to beaches that meet the strictest standards of environmental quality, safety, and sustainability under the national “Clean Beaches” program. This event provided a platform to showcase environmental journalism as a strategic tool for ecological education and awareness, particularly through the launch of interactive programs via “Beach Radio.” Throughout the event days, the station broadcast awareness content, open debates, and eco-themed competitions, offering summer visitors and their families an educational and entertaining space that encouraged the adoption of eco-responsible behaviors.
This initiative was organized under the supervision of the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, which actively supports citizen initiatives aimed at enhancing environmental awareness, especially in coastal areas. This approach aligns with the Foundation’s overarching vision, combining environmental protection with community empowerment by involving all stakeholders in the preservation of ecosystems.
Among the highlights of this event was the launch of a new edition of the sustainable ecological village “Saifkom,” supported by Ciments du Maroc, a long-standing partner of the Safi beach since 2001. This village serves as a tangible model of corporate commitment to sustainable development. It offered several interactive workshops, including:
• Environmental and Recycling Workshop: raising awareness about the impact of plastic pollution, particularly microplastics, on marine life;
• Artistic Creation Workshop: aimed at children and youth to create artworks from recycled materials;
• “Voice of the Waves” Workshop: a space for dialogue between environmental organizations and summer visitors to strengthen community participation;
• “History of Safi” Augmented Reality Workshop: a creative interaction with local heritage by combining technology and environmental education.
The event was marked by strong institutional presence, including the participation of the Governor of the Safi province, the President of the municipal council, the President of the local council, as well as representatives from local authorities, security, Ciments du Maroc, and civil society. The various speakers unanimously emphasized the importance of close coordination among public, private, and associative actors to consolidate the achievements of sustainable development and preserve the Blue Flag status, which the Safi beach has held since 2009.
Beach Radio established itself as a meeting point between environmental journalism and summer guests. It played a crucial role in popularizing ecological concepts and expanding awareness efforts, becoming an educational platform on the ground that promotes a culture of respect for the environment and responsible ecological behavior.
The “Saifkom” village now serves as an innovative platform for environmental citizenship, aiming to engage younger generations in ecological issues through creative tools combining art, technology, and non-formal education. It is part of a dynamic movement towards building a society that places the environment at the center of its priorities, making everyday behaviors a lever for positive change.
