The WHO Officially Announces That Morocco is Managing Hepatitis B
In line with its efforts to combat epidemic diseases, the Kingdom of Morocco’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection has announced that the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean officially recognized, during its session held on November 13, 2025, in Cairo, that Morocco is now classified as a “country managing hepatitis B.”
This recognition marks a significant milestone, reflecting the substantial progress made by Morocco in the prevention, screening, and management of viral hepatitis B. It also represents an important step towards achieving the strategic goal of eliminating hepatitis B as a public health issue.
This decision is based on the remarkable national performance recorded in key areas, including:
- Universal vaccination of newborns, provided under an effective and impactful national immunization program;
- Strengthening the epidemiological surveillance system and laboratory diagnostic capabilities;
- Regular development and updating of therapeutic protocols, based on data from the latest national survey focused on viral hepatitis B.
On this occasion, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection expresses its high appreciation for the essential role played by healthcare professionals at all levels in planning, implementing, and monitoring public health programs, as well as in the ongoing improvement of their effectiveness and impact.
The Ministry also extends its gratitude to all national and international partners for their continuous support, which has been instrumental in achieving this major public health outcome in Morocco.
