World Premiere: Coronary Bypass Surgery Without Opening the Chest
For the first time in medical history, a medical team has performed a coronary bypass surgery without opening the patient’s chest, marking a significant breakthrough in cardiac surgery. This procedure allows for rerouting blood flow around an obstruction in the coronary arteries, similar to the modern techniques used for aortic valve replacement.
An Innovative “Out-of-the-Box” Approach
According to Christopher Bruce, head of the research team at the American National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, this surgery required “real innovation” and resulted in a practical and effective solution.
The intervention was performed by introducing surgical instruments through a blood vessel in the patient’s leg, who was unable to undergo traditional bypass surgery due to heart failure and malfunctioning artificial heart valves.
Promising Results for the Future
After six months of monitoring, the patient showed no signs of coronary obstruction, confirming the success of the technique. Researchers emphasize that this method could represent a less invasive and safer alternative to traditional heart bypass surgery, particularly for high-risk patients.
