Devastating Storm in Rimini: Significant Property Damage but No Casualties

Severe Storm Hits Rimini, Causing Significant Damage

A violent storm struck the seaside resort of Rimini on Sunday, located on the Adriatic coast of Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, resulting in considerable material damage but no casualties, according to local authorities.

The city’s municipal administration characterized the phenomenon as a maritime supercell—an unusual and particularly powerful weather event. It produced 74 mm of rainfall, including 30 to 50 mm within just twenty minutes, accompanied by wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h and hail.

The system moved from Ravenna to Rimini, causing flooding, the uprooting of over 260 trees, damage to roofs, and the loss of beach equipment in this popular vacation area.

Italian media reported on Monday that train services were disrupted for several hours due to fallen trees blocking the tracks, which also damaged several vehicles and campsites.

The storm also affected neighboring provinces, including Forlì-Cesena and Ravenna, prompting the mobilization of civil protection teams to assess the damage, secure affected areas, and evacuate around twenty passengers trapped on a train near Bellaria-Igea Marina after a tree fell.

Despite the intensity of the incident, the president of the region, Michele de Pascale, sought to reassure the public: “The damage is significant but contained; services have been quickly restored, and the beaches are once again ready to welcome tourists.”
