INTERPOL: Lucas Philippe Takes Office as President for Four Years

On Thursday, during the 93rd General Assembly of INTERPOL in Marrakech, Mr. Lucas Philippe was elected as the General Controller and Advisor for European and International Affairs at the French National Police. He succeeds Mr. Ahmed Naser Al Raisi from the United Arab Emirates and will serve a four-year term.

Election Results

Mr. Lucas Philippe received 84 votes (51.2%), surpassing Turkish candidate Mustafa Serkan Sabanca, who garnered 60 votes (36.6%). Other candidates included Anne-Marie Nainda from Namibia and Demelash Gebremicheal Wewdeyes from Ethiopia, who received 12 votes (7.3%) and 8 votes (4.9%), respectively. The INTERPOL General Assembly operates on the principle of “one country, one vote,” ensuring each vote has equal weight.

Role and Responsibilities of the President

During his term, Lucas Philippe will preside over the meetings of the Executive Committee, which is responsible for overseeing the implementation of decisions made during the General Assembly. The position of President is part-time and unpaid, involving the annual chairing of the General Assembly and three sessions of the Executive Committee.

Strategic Mission within INTERPOL

The President must ensure that INTERPOL’s activities align with the decisions of the General Assembly and the Executive Committee. He also maintains a direct and ongoing relationship with the organization’s Secretary-General to ensure the institution operates smoothly.
