Devastating Storm in Rimini: Significant Property Damage but No Casualties

Severe Storm Strikes Rimini, Italy, Leaving Significant Damage

A violent storm swept through the coastal resort town of Rimini on Sunday, affecting the Adriatic region of Emilia-Romagna. Fortunately, local authorities reported that no casualties occurred as a result of the tempest, although the material damage was substantial.

According to the city’s administration, the storm was classified as a maritime supercell, a rare and particularly powerful meteorological phenomenon. It unleashed an impressive 74 mm of rainfall, with 30 to 50 mm falling within just twenty minutes. The storm was accompanied by wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h and hail.

The weather system moved from Ravenna to Rimini, leading to flooding, the uprooting of over 260 trees, damaged rooftops, and the loss of beach equipment in this popular tourist area.

Italian media reported on Monday that rail traffic had been halted for several hours due to fallen trees obstructing the tracks, causing damage to several vehicles and campsites.

The storm also impacted the neighboring provinces of Forlì-Cesena and Ravenna, prompting the mobilization of civil protection teams to assess the damage, secure affected areas, and evacuate around twenty passengers trapped on a train near Bellaria-Igea Marina after a tree fell on the tracks.

Despite the severity of this weather event, Michele de Pascale, the president of the region, sought to reassure the public: “The damage is significant yet contained; services have been restored swiftly, and the beaches are ready to welcome tourists once again.”
