Cybersecurity: Morocco Under Pressure Amidst Intensified Attacks

The surge in cyberattacks poses an unprecedented challenge for Morocco: protecting an expanding digital space while maintaining its sovereignty. Amid notable incidents, international pressure, and rapid digital transformation, the Kingdom is entering a new era where cybersecurity has become a national priority.
A Growing and Constant Threat
In recent years, cyberattacks have escalated dramatically. The incident involving the National Social Security Fund (CNSS), where data from millions of insured individuals was compromised, stands as a strong indicator of existing vulnerabilities. Since then, the trend has noticeably worsened.
By 2025, the General Directorate for the Security of Information Systems (DGSSI) reported 879 major cyberattacks, with over a hundred requiring direct intervention. Simultaneously, more than 20 million intrusion attempts were detected in just six months, illustrating a relentless pressure on national systems.
A Country Under Increasing Threat
Beyond the sheer volume, the nature of the attacks is evolving. Morocco has now positioned itself among the African countries most exposed to state-sponsored cyberattacks. This geopolitical dimension reflects the Kingdom’s growing strategic importance in regional economic and digital exchanges.
Critical infrastructures, public institutions, and large enterprises are becoming prime targets in an international context marked by rising tensions in cyberspace.
Digital Sovereignty in the Crosshairs
In light of these risks, cybersecurity is emerging as a cornerstone of national sovereignty. Morocco’s strategy for 2030 aims to build a resilient digital ecosystem capable of preventing, detecting, and effectively responding to threats.
Emphasis is placed on protecting sensitive infrastructures, improving governance, and fostering local skill development. The goal is clear: to reduce technological dependence and enhance the country’s autonomy in a field that has become highly strategic.
An Issue Beyond Just Technology
Today, cybersecurity is no longer solely the concern of IT specialists. It affects the entire economy, institutions, and citizens alike. The protection of data and systems has become a fundamental condition for digital trust.
In this context, Morocco is racing against time: securing its digital transformation while laying the foundations for sustainable digital sovereignty.
