New York: At Least 13 Dead Due to Arctic Cold Wave

A Polar Cold Wave Hits New York City: At Least 13 Confirmed Dead
A polar cold wave affecting New York City has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals, according to municipal authorities.
A Heavy Human Toll
Local media reports that a spokesperson from New York City’s mayor’s office stated, “We can confirm the deaths of 13 people since the onset of this snowstorm and extreme cold period.” The spokesperson added that specialized teams are patrolling the streets to assist those without shelter.
Rallying for the Homeless
The official also mentioned that over 800 homeless individuals have been sheltered since the beginning of this severe weather event, which could mark the longest consecutive streak of sub-zero temperatures in the city’s history.
A National Winter Storm
This tragedy occurs as a new winter storm struck the United States on Saturday, bringing unusual snowfall to coastal resorts in the southeastern part of the country. A mass of frigid air from the Arctic is expected to extend as far south as Florida.
Persistent Extreme Weather Conditions
This climatic instability follows a snowstorm that impacted multiple regions from Texas to Washington last weekend, disrupting travel and resulting in nearly a hundred fatalities nationwide.
The U.S. weather services have warned that the current phenomenon is twofold: snow is expected from Saturday to Sunday along the Atlantic coast, particularly in North and South Carolina, while a polar cold wave is set to affect two-thirds of the eastern United States, from North Dakota to Florida, lasting until Monday.
