Evacuation of Thousands of Residents in New Zealand as Cyclone “Fayano” Approaches

The authorities in New Zealand ordered the evacuation of thousands of residents on Saturday as the North Island prepares for the arrival of Cyclone “Fayano,” amid alerts regarding risks of coastal flooding and landslides.

State of Emergency and Preventive Evacuations

A state of emergency has been declared in several regions, particularly in certain areas of the city of Whakatāne, which has a population of over 37,000. Located approximately 430 kilometers north of the capital, Wellington, the city is among the areas most vulnerable to the cyclone’s impacts.

Violent Winds and Heavy Rainfall Expected

National meteorological services have warned that the cyclone will be accompanied by intense rainfall and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 130 km/h. These conditions could exacerbate the risks of flooding and landslides, especially in coastal and low-lying areas.

Memories of Cyclone Gabrielle Still Fresh

This situation evokes memories of Cyclone Gabrielle, which struck the country in 2023, resulting in the deaths of 11 people and the displacement of thousands, marking one of the most significant natural disasters in recent years.

The authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and strictly follow safety guidelines to minimize risks associated with this weather phenomenon.
