Morocco Takes the Lead Over Spain in Electric Battery Production

Morocco takes a significant step in the electric vehicle industry with the launch of initial battery production tests in Kénitra, positioning itself ahead of Spain, where major battery factories are still under construction.
An Industrial Strategy in the Making for Several Years
This advancement is part of an industrial strategy that the Kingdom has been pursuing for nearly a decade, aimed at becoming a major automotive hub at the gates of Europe.
Morocco has bolstered its logistical infrastructure through the development of modern highways and strategic ports, notably the Tanger Med Port and the Nador West Med Port, which have become essential pillars of industrial export.
International Manufacturers Already Established
The Kingdom also benefits from the presence of major automotive groups such as Renault, with factories in Tangier and Casablanca, and Stellantis in Kénitra.
This industrial base enables Morocco to offer competitive production costs and an efficient logistics chain.
Kénitra Enters the Age of Electric Batteries
The industrial site in Kénitra has recently produced its first battery cells as part of a testing phase, giving Morocco a technological edge over Spain, where the projects in Sagunto and Saragossa are not yet operational.
According to various Spanish media outlets, this advancement could allow the Kingdom to produce electric vehicles more quickly and at a lower cost.
A Project Supported by International Investments
The project is spearheaded by Gotion High-Tech, in which Volkswagen has a significant stake alongside Chinese investors.
The total investment is estimated at €3.2 billion and is expected to create approximately 3,000 direct jobs.
Morocco Strengthens Its Industrial Positioning
In the short term, the batteries produced in Kénitra are intended to supply the Stellantis industrial site in Morocco as well as part of Volkswagen’s European demand, while awaiting the ramp-up of Spanish factories.
This development confirms Morocco’s ambition to become a key player in the electric vehicle and battery industries in the Mediterranean region and Africa.
