Football: PSG Crowned Champions of France for the 13th Time in Their History

With six matches remaining in the season, Paris Saint-Germain has been crowned the champion of France for the 13th time in its history.

They secured this title with a victory at the Parc des Princes on Saturday against SCO Angers, winning 1-0 in a match that counted towards the 28th round of Ligue 1.

The lone goal for the team led by Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi, who are the reigning champions, was scored by Désiré Doué following a perfectly timed pass from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the 55th minute.

Following this success, the Parisians remain unbeaten this season and lead the league with a total of 74 points, making it impossible for their closest rival, AS Monaco (50 points), to catch up, especially as they were set to play in Brest later that evening.

PSG thus becomes the second team in history to finish their first 28 matches of a Ligue 1 season unbeaten, following FC Nantes in 1994-1995.

Luis Enrique’s squad, already qualified for the Coupe de France final, is also preparing for their upcoming quarter-final match in the Champions League. They will face English club Aston Villa at home next Wednesday, just a month after eliminating Liverpool in the quarter-finals.

As for Angers, the newly-promoted team suffered their tenth consecutive defeat on the road at PSG in the top flight. In fact, the Parisians have won each of their last fifteen encounters against Angers in Ligue 1, establishing the longest winning streak of one team against another in the history of the competition.

Additionally, the Ile-de-France side has not lost any of their last thirty-seven home matches against promoted teams in Ligue 1 (33 wins, 4 draws), dating back to May 2010, when they were defeated at home by Montpellier (1-3).

On Saturday, SCO Angers also faced their fifth defeat without scoring, a poor performance they had not experienced consecutively in Ligue 1 since May 1980.

Currently sitting 14th in the standings, Angers is only three points above the relegation zone.
